June is here and that means it’s time for Father’s Day. But honoring your dad doesn’t have to mean dropping a pretty penny on an expensive gift. Here are some ways that you can make Father’s Day truly special for your pop without spending a ton of money. Go for a Bike Ride Chances are good that dad is the guy who taught you how to ride a bike in the first place. Show him the skills that you’ve picked up in the decades since then. Plan out a bike ride along the best trails near him and spend a little quality time together. Make a day of it by planning a long-distance ride that will have both of you worn out and packed with memories of the best Father’s Day ever. Minor League Ballgame Like a lot of people, you might be tired of the high prices demanded by the nation’s major league ballparks. The good news is that nearly every city in America is near a minor league team. You can see tomorrow’s stars today when you head out to a minor league ballpark. You might even be able to catch a current star recovering from an injury. Minor league parks are more intimate and the play can be even fiercer than that in “The Show” — after all, these guys are still trying to make it. Throw a BBQ in His Honor Remember the summer days when your dad would cook burgers and hot dogs on the grill? He took care of just about everything and you didn’t have a care in the world. Now it’s time to repay the favor. Get some steaks, some burgers and some dogs going. No matter how much dad protests, make him sit in a lounge chair while you prepare everything. He’s earned it. The memories that you two make will mean more to him than another tie or a box of golf balls. Hiking Want to really spend some quality time with dad? Throw on a backpack together and head out to the woods. You’ll get all the nature that you would on a bike ride, but with a lot more conversation. If dad has other nature-oriented hobbies such as bird watching, you can suggest that as a way to spend this special day. A Round of Golf on You Remember the days when dad was your own personal golf coach? He stood by and watched you hit ball after ball off the tee, preparing you for a future in the sport men use to socialize. Take him out for 18 holes of relaxation and bonding — and maybe give him some pointers on his form that you’ve picked up since he first taught you how to tee off. Car Shows If you live in a city of any size, there’s a good chance you’re near a car show. Particularly during the warmer months, car shows abound as gearheads get their rides out of storage and start showing off that chrome. Dad will undoubtedly see what his dream car was back in the day. Those kinds of memories are worth a lot more than another five pack of boxers. Pamper Him The old school barbershop revival is in full swing. Giving dad a gift certificate to head down to the local barbershop for the works will have him remembering his glory days, as well as making him look and feel great. The great thing about the old school barbershops is that they don’t cost a lot of money, so you can get him everything that he needs for less than what most women pay for a haircut. “8 Inexpensive Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day” was written by Nicholas Pell.
