For many of us the answer comes out to “No…but I want to.” Whether you’re a budgeting pro or just trying to make ends meet, we ALL have areas in our financial life we can improve. This Financial Awareness Day we are taking things back to basics, starting with our money goals. Money goals may mean different things for everyone. For some it may be as basic as saving $25 per week, and for others, it’s paying off student loan debt. Your personal money goals say a lot about both where you are financially, and where you want to be – all of which make up your Financial Persona. Discovering your Financial Persona is as simple as answering this one question: What is my financial goal? A. I want to take my money to the next level! Budgets and savings? Check. But what about investments? B. Save money! I’m good day today, but I might not be if there were a hiccup with my income or an emergency. Getting my savings in place will give me a huge piece of mind. C. I NEED to pay off my debt. I’ve made some money mistakes (who hasn’t?!), but I’m ready to get my finances back on track. D. Honestly, I have no idea. I feel like a bit of a hot mess when it comes to money. Can someone just do it for me?! Got your answer? Find out more about your financial persona below! A’s: The Money Master When it comes to managing your money, you’ve got this down! Not only are you great at budgeting your money, you’re also great at saving. You are well on your way to having a healthy 401(k), which is a huge accomplishment because many of us don’t even know what that means! You’ve mastered the art of a debt snowball and are living debt free (hallelujah!) And when it comes to filing your taxes, forget the expensive tax store, you got this (with TurboTax)! Most importantly you’re always giving others advice on how they can improve their financial situation. Seriously, you’re such a pro, most people wish they had their finances together like you do! But while your budgets and automatic payments are all set up, there are still some financial steps you’d like to master like investing or buying a home. How does a mortgage work? Why would I put my money in a fund versus saving? What is a stock and do I need one?? Multiple?! It’s ok to admit you don’t know everything – this is a safe space. Whatever new step you’re hoping to take on your financial journey, stay confident in your Money Mastering skills. We believe in you! B’s: The Savvy Spender ‘Saving’ and ‘sale’ are your two favorite words. You know the dates of every department store sale and your friends LOVE you for this! But it’s all about balance. While you get a rush buying this season’s latest shoes or tickets to your favorite concert, you know that everyday money habits can make or break your financial status. You’ve definitely learned the hard way how stressful it is to live paycheck to paycheck, and you can only eat so many boxes of mac and cheese for dinner before enough is enough! So budgeting is a word that you have come to embrace. You’re realistic about needing a budget and sticking to it, it’s just hard for you to actually follow through sometimes. You know $6 lattes or that breakfast burrito every morning can take a toll on your bank account, but now it’s time to put those lessons from your financial past into practice. You’re committed to getting and staying on track. The one thing you are desperately searching for right now is someone or something to tell you that you’re doing the right thing. And you probably are, but you’d just like that little extra boost of confidence. Good news, Savvy Spenders! Our friends over at Mint know how to set you up with a budget that works for you and your goals. Just remember: when you’re on top of your money, life is good. C’s: The Debt Diminisher Being financially fit isn’t just about how much money is in your bank account or the number of zeros on your paystub. Financial health surpasses the numbers – and you know that the most. Whether you charged up a lengthy credit card bill or forgot to set your timer for the student loan grace period expiration (guilty), you’ve made a few money mistakes in the past that have put you in debt. But like the warrior you are, you never let your debt hold you back. You try your hardest to pay more than the minimum payments each month and are super motivated to find out how to improve your numbers. One area you truly excel in is having the #RealMoneyTalk with yourself… a lot. You are never afraid or ashamed to admit that you can’t go out for drinks because you have to pay your bills instead. Honesty is key in your life, and honestly, you know that there is no instant fix for getting out of debt. But as the Debt Diminisher, you’re working super hard to live that debt free lifestyle. You got this! D’s: The ‘Get It Together’ And for some of us, maybe the answer isn’t clear. What should I be doing with my money? What are realistic goals? WTF is an emergency fund?! SOMEBODY HELP ME!!! We’ve all been guilty of not taking care of our money. Whether it’s spending way too much on the latest Fortnite victory dance, or saying ‘who cares’ and getting those On The Run tickets – being financially responsible is not always top of mind. However, you’re an adult now and it’s time to get it together! When it comes to making smart money moves, it’s never too late to start – or start over. As your friend, we’re here to tell you that you need to get it together and start giving your finances some love. If you’re ready to go from Hot Mess to Money Master, we recommend checking your credit score for free with Turbo. Baby steps, baby steps young grasshopper. What’s your financial persona?
