This weekend we’re celebrating Labor Day, which means the government’s celebrating your hard work by giving you the day off. While long weekends are great, if you don’t take a moment to unwind they don’t do you much good. Make your holiday count by taking in one last breath of summer to recharge your batteries, spend quality time with your family, and take a day off from spending. We’ve pulled together some great low-cost ways to celebrate Labor Day weekend. Host a barbecue potluck Barbecues are one of the traditional ways to celebrate Labor Day weekend, but many people avoid them because of the expense. Consider having a potluck and ask guests to bring a variety of food to cut costs. Not only is it a great way to personally save money on groceries and cut down the work on your end, but allows everyone to participate and try new recipes. Consider a 3 day ‘staycation’ Want to go on vacation without any air travel or hotel expenses? Try a ‘staycation’ – just make sure to explore a part of your city or state that you never have before. You’ll feel like a tourist – at a fraction of the cost. Visit a local farmers’ market A terrific low-cost weekend morning can be enjoyed by all at a local farmers’ market. You’ll get your fill of fresh produce, while also getting a sense of the local farms within driving distance of your home. Go camping… in your own backyard! Campgrounds during Labor Day are typically filled with vacationers, so instead of traveling somewhere that costs money, try camping in the backyard. Have a small campfire, and roast marshmallows, hotdogs, and other picnic foods. This is a great way to bond with your family or friends without spending a dime. Grab that beach towel and hit the sand Never underestimate what a day at the beach will do for your body and soul. Either get to a crowded beach spot early in the day, or find your own secluded area so you can soak in all the rest and relaxation that you deserve. Give back to the community If you’re looking to save money, then volunteering is a great way to do it. Go to a local animal shelter, food bank or participate in a fun run. A lot of organizations hold special events during Labor Day weekend. Collect cans of food, gather donations, or help prepare meals. You get to do something fun and give back to the community. A three-day weekend full of fun doesn’t mean you have to empty your wallet. Take advantage of what’s around you, spend time with loved ones, and you’ll have an enjoyable three days without breaking the bank.
